Meet Joe Formica and Bitesize UX
Founder of Bitesize UX | Lead UX Instructor at General Assembly NYC | Senior User Experience Designer
Joe has taught UX Design at General Assembly in New York for six years as a Distinguished Faculty Member, and has created and taught Entrepreneurship courses at Fordham University Business School. Through these roles, he has worked with thousands of designers-in-training to help them take the next steps in their career.
In addition to teaching, Joe has been a self-employed Senior Product Designer for the past eight years. He has worked with dozens of clients, ranging from Fortune 500 companies, to new startups, where he has played an integral role in their growth and success.

Humility: The Designer’s Most Essential Trait
Thursday, April 29, 2021
7:00-8:00 PM EST | Virtual Event
The NYC UXPA is hosting a presentation by Justin Dauer on Humility in UX Design on Thursday, April 29 from 7:00-8:00 PM EST.
“Humility must be in the DNA of every UX designer, researcher, process, and artifact. Why? Humility makes us students of our craft, always willing / able / receptive to evolve based on feedback from business stakeholders as well as the people we’re co-designing with along the way. It yields connection (to humans, our work, the environment), objective mindsets, and diverse / non-homogenous thinking.” — Justin Dauer

Join us for an online conversation with a panel of career changers from various backgrounds, who made their way into UX Research and Design.

Meet our Panelists:
Swati Nikumb
Swati Nikumb is a UX Researcher who transitioned into the UX field after working for 3 years as a Speech-Language Pathologist. While working in healthcare, she realized that assistive devices designed to help patients communicate, did not work well and were not designed with the end user in mind. To make the career change, Swati chose to learn about UX research and design on her own, using online resources, books and by creating her own projects. Currently, Swati works as a UX Researcher at UserZoom and also volunteers as a UX researcher for two non-profit organizations. You can learn more about Swati and her work on her website.
Kellie Porter
Kellie Porter has been a UX Designer, Full-Stack Web Developer, and Technical Instructor for the past 3 years. Wesley Ham
Born and raised in Baton Rouge, seasoned in Brooklyn. I have been making photographs and teaching young people whatever I have learned on my path. My new journey has me pursuing UX/UI Design, and I am just as committed to a positive exchange with people through design. Find Wesley on Instagram, Dribble and LinkedIn.

Atomic Research
Atomic Research
May 22, 2018
Atomic Research is an approach to managing research knowledge that redefines the atomic unit of a research insight. Instead of reports, slide decks, and dashboards, the new atomic unit of a research insight is a nugget. During this talk, Tomer will introduce the approach, walkthrough examples for using it, and discuss available tools.
I Just Had the Best (Facilitated) Meeting
You make the world better through great user experiences. You want to spend more time creating that world and less time explaining the basics, defending your choices, and selling the best approaches in meetings. But in meetings is where you find yourself, and it feels like they often introduce friction, ambiguity, and drag. But the good news is a meeting can be designed just like any experience. By integrating human centered design itself into our meetings, we can start to recognize our own biases, become better facilitators, and run the better meeting experiences that we deserve.
Creating Team Bedrock to Make Meaningful Work
People want to spend more time on meaningful work and with teams who are engaged in making that happen. Projects where people's skills and practice strengths are working well together to encourage people to learn, improve and thrive. However, we all get lost in the noise, speed and deliverables of the day to day work that we forget about why we are working on a project in the first place. This results in feeling purposeless, stressed, unhealthy and in a state of “sleepwalking”.
AI and Machine Learning Demystified
What is machine learning? Is UX relevant in the age of artificial intelligence? How can I take advantage of cognitive computing? Get answers to these questions and learn about the implications for your work in this session. Carol will help you understand at a basic level how these systems are built and what is required to get insights from them. Carol will present examples of how machine learning is already being used and explore the ethical challenges inherent in creating AI. You will walk away with an awareness of the weaknesses of AI and the knowledge of how these systems work.
Hairy Arms, Painting Ducks, and Design Decisions
Convincing someone else of design decisions is difficult. It can be so difficult, in fact, that we’ll do almost anything to make sure that we don’t have to make changes we disagree with. But from simple psychology to outright deception, not all tactics are created equal. We need to find ways to be persuasive with stakeholders without using trickery. Actually, the same approaches we champion with users of our products are also helpful in our meetings about design. Learn how to manage the conversation through effective techniques that will help others agree with our choices while maintaining the integrity of the user experience.
WUD 2017: Let's Talk About Inclusion
Of course we want to be inclusive...but where to start? There’s accessibility, language, digital inclusion, global, cultural, and socio-economic differences. Learn how to broaden your research to include more voices in the stories you collect. And how to use those stories in a conscious act of innovation.
We’ll introduce some of our best research tips, some of the people we’ve met, and stories that changed our product. Then, you’ll explore ideas for how to make your own work more inclusive. You'll leave inspired to be an inclusion superhero and delight all your users.
Leveling Up with Design Ops
Organizations that are leveling up are creating roles and giving intentional attention to Operationalizing design. Through this panel, we're going to look at examples of design operations and how they help organizations deliver better value for the people they serve.
Great User Research in an Agile World
Agile is great. It gets you to market faster, with better quality and less risk. It’s flexible, transparent and engages both your organization and its customers. One problem though; it’s a developer-heavy, fast process that may appear to leave little time for User Research.
How do we plan, execute and deliver findings in the tight timelines of Agile? What happens to higher-level UX strategy? How do we make this work in a large enterprise across distributed teams?
This talk will share the perspective of three members of the Bloomberg UX team; a project manager, a user researcher and an interaction designer. We’ll share how we’re solving these challenges here at Bloomberg. We’ll also share some best practices and give advice for overcoming similar challenges in your own organization.
